Just downstream is a sunny boulder bar river birch woodland. Across river are house size boulders and a steep slope which probably pushes river over to this floodplain during high water events.;Sandy floodplain between upland (old road bed and RR grade) and narrow zone of sunny riverscour shrub-prairie. Stand of small to medium size hemlock mixed with deciduous trees including red oak and river birch. Center of plot is open sand due to past camping but camp has been flooded and is beginning to revegetate. Shrub layer with moderate cover by great laurel over mossy hummocks. Frequently flooded. Large black gum and snag.
Representativeness
Plot covers most of sandy alluvial bench with hemlock floodplain forest. Community is about 10 m wide. Canopy physiognomy continues up and downstream among boulders and steep edge.
